Using a pair of compact Leicas, Katz produced and hand-developed eighty black and white portraits of Richter painting, sketching and mentally processing his work. These candid photographs reflect genuine moments in the life of his subject, encompassing humour, melancholy and love. Katz, a veteran of the art world himself, has captured many other legendary figures in his work, and has exhibited in some of the world’s most important galleries. Among his subjects are Joseph Beuys, Sigmar Polke, Rosemarie Trockel, Martin Kippenberger and Georg Baselitz. Katz’s striking photographs offer new insights into the celebrated career of Gerhard Richter.
