This publication appears following an earlier exhibition commemorating the legacy of Japanese film director and screenwriter Akira Kurosawa (1910–1998), held on the occasion of the National Film Archive of Japan opening. With the success of ‘Rashomon’, Kurosawa opened up the world of Japanese cinema to Western markets, and he has influenced countless directors ever since. The exhibition presented a stunning array of 84 posters of his films from 30 countries. The posters, evidence of the wide circulation, immense popularity, and high artistic quality of the director’s work, were all selected from the collection of Kurosawa researcher and expert Toshifumi Makita.
