‘Is there anybody there? said the Traveller, / Knocking on the moonlit door’… Rereading [Walter de la Mare’s] ‘The Listeners’ now, it strikes me that it works well as an allegory for the writing of poetry; any poet, in the act of writing, could be that lonely traveller knocking on a door by moonlight (if not actual, then metaphorical, moonlight – everyone knows poets are obsessed by the moon). And as W.S. Graham liked to point out, a poem is always speaking to ‘a host of phantom listeners’: ‘Do not think you have to say / Anything back. But you do / Say something back which I / Hear by the way I speak to you.’
